What we are up to and welcome

Dear Parents welcome to year 1! We hope you had a fantastic summer and we are looking forward to getting to know you and your children this year.

The year 1 team this year:

Class 1-

Miss Gretton (Teacher; 5 days)

Mrs Parkin (Teaching Assistant; Tues, Wed, Thurs)

Miss Thraves (Teaching Assistant; 5 days)

Class 2-

Mrs Buckland (Teacher; Wed, Thurs, Fri)

Mrs Cranefield (Teacher; Mon, Tues)

Mrs Steele (Teaching Assistant; Mon, Tues, Wed)

Mrs Tomlinson (Teaching Assistant; Thurs, Fri)

We have got a very exciting term ahead of us, starting with Roald Dahl week, (don’t forget to dress up on Tuesday 13th September!). Take a look at the Roald Dahl foundation for some ideas. There will be an exhibition showcasing our work during the week, which we would love to see you at if you can make it, (Friday 16th September).

This term our topic will be Hot and Cold. We will be doing various fun activities which will cover all areas of the curriculum. For example, making windmills and rain gauges, and looking at hot and cold places. In literacy we will be reading the story of the Rainbow Fish.

PE

This term PE will take place on a Monday afternoon outside on the playground. Therefore we ask that your child has a suitable outdoor PE kit every week.

If your child wears earrings they must be removed at home on a Monday morning or if you are unable to remove them please send plasters so that we can cover them. This is for your child’s safety.

Home Learning and Reading

By the end of year 1 the national expectation is that children are reading at a book level 17. We as a team want every child to reach that level. But we can’t do this on our own, we need your support! If you could read with your child at least 3 times a week, (if not, more!), this will really help. We continue the reading Olympics in year 1 and every Friday we will be counting your child’s home reads.

Bronze= 15 home reads

Silver= 25 home reads

Gold= 40 home reads

Ruby= 70 home reads

Diamond= 100 home reads.

For those children that achieve gold and above by the end of each half term there will be a class reward.

We will be having a key stage 1 reading meeting on Thursday 15th September at 2:45pm, where we will be discussing reading expectations and strategies in more detail. We hope you can attend!

Home learning will be given out weekly on a Friday, and we ask for it to be returned the following Thursday, so that we can mark it and share what the children have done.

If you have any free time and would like to come and hear readers it would be greatly appreciated!

Golden Time
Your child might have been talking about Golden time. Golden time is a whole school reward. During the week children earn time to then play and celebrate on a friday afternoon. However, some children may earn more time than others depending on how well they meet our school rules.

The staff fill the classroom with a range of activities and games that the children enjoy freely playing with.
