This summer term, we have lots of exciting things lined up! Our topic is Into the Wild, in which we will be learning all about the natural world, including habitats, animals and humans, food chains and sustainability.
This topic will be hands-on and full of fun! We have several exciting trips planned, to inspire the children’s learning and build on skills, including a day in Sherwood Forest and at Stonebridge City Farm.
Our writing this term will be based on the wonderful novel Charlotte’s Web which is full of thought-provoking and touching concepts.
As you may be aware, Y4 will begin the Accelerated Reader scheme this term. This will give children a ZPD range instead of a reading level. You may notice that the books provided to the children are shorter and sometimes more basic than your child has been used to. The scheme develops understanding of texts, and the books children will be reading have been carefully matched to their current level of understanding.
Children will take a quiz once they have read each book, which will continue to monitor their progress and improve their ZPD. As this increases, so will the complexity of the books they read.
For the duration of the summer term, Class 8 have been lucky enough to take part in a trial for violin lessons.
Maths and English home learning will be sent home every Friday with spellings and expected to be returned by the following Thursday. We are placing a great deal of importance on spellings and are giving the children time to practice at school as well as at home. Spellings will be tested, but this may not take place every Friday.
It is expected that all children read on a daily basis at home. It is clear that those children who read at home regularly make better progress in all subjects than those who do not. Please, please encourage your children to spend 10 minutes daily reading (it really isn’t a long time, and makes such a difference). All children should easily achieve at least a Silver in the Reading Olympics!
PE sessions will be on Wednesday afternoons and will take place out on the playground. It is school policy that children wear suitable clothes and footwear, and as usual all jewellery, including earrings, must be removed. As these sessions will be taking place outside on the playground, please ensure your child has warm clothing and trainers with appropriate grip.
